Chinese investments in the United States

The China Global Investment Tracker follows large Chinese investments and construction projects around the world. The top investment recipient is the US, which took in $201 billion from 2005 through 2024. But the PRC’s spending here has been negligible since 2018. China’s investment around the world was stable at a historically low level in 2024 and barely visible in the US, the fuss over land notwithstanding. Investment could rise somewhat under Donald Trump but American suspicion of technology loss and large Chinese enterprises rules out more high-spending years.

Seven different industries have drawn at least $15 billion in Chinese investment, led still by property. With spending so low, however, there is no “it” sector now or on the horizon.

New York leads in total investment attracted, and California leads in the number of deals. No other state is close on either dimension.
