Press Release: Leading Economist Ed Glaeser Joins AEI

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Washington, DC (November 29, 2023)—American Enterprise Institute (AEI) Director of Economic Policy Studies Michael R. Strain announced today that Edward L. Glaeser has joined AEI, focusing on urban economics; cities, including urban policy and labor markets; public economics; and innovation and economic growth.

Concurrently, Dr. Glaeser is the Fred and Eleanor Glimp Professor of Economics and the chair of the Department of Economics at Harvard University, where he has taught microeconomics and urban economics since 1992.

“My colleagues and I are delighted to welcome Ed Glaeser to the AEI community of scholars,” said Dr. Strain. “Ed is one of the nation’s leading economists. His research is insightful and cutting edge. But in addition to that, Ed wants to use research to improve public policy with the goal of strengthening the nation. I’m thrilled to welcome him to AEI as a colleague.”

In addition to his Harvard work, Dr. Glaeser has received many grants, prizes, and honors from the American Academy of Political and Social Science, MacArthur Foundation, National Science Foundation, the Social Science Research Council and Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. He has served as an editor of the Quarterly Journal of Economics and currently serves as a co-editor of the Journal of Urban Economics. He has also served on the board of the Social Science Research Council, and other institutions. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Econometric Society, the National Academy of Public Administration and the National Academy of Social Insurance. 

Dr. Glaeser is the author and coauthor of many books and book chapters, including Survival of the City: Living and Thriving in an Age of Isolation (Penguin Press, 2021); Triumph of the City: How Our Greatest Invention Makes Us Richer, Smarter, Greener, Healthier, and Happier (Penguin Press, 2011); Rethinking Federal Housing Policy: How to Make Housing Plentiful and Affordable (AEI Press, 2008); and Cities, Agglomeration, and Spatial Equilibrium (Oxford University Press, 2008).

He has been widely published in academic journals, including the American Economic Review, Journal of Political Economy, Journal of Public Economics, Journal of Urban Economics, and the Quarterly Journal of Economics. In the popular press, he has been published in the New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Atlantic, and City Journal, among others.

He has a PhD in economics from the University of Chicago and an AB in economics from Princeton University.
